Mistakes happen. Fossil identification can lead to a number of mistakes, the most obvious being the misidentification of a species. In this case a species of pterosaur, previously only reported from South America, appeared in the Romanian fossil record. A lost migrant? A previously unknown population that will revolutionise our understanding of pterosaur evolution? Or perhaps, as a large international team has concluded, it was all just a fragment of turtle..... Well the original describers of the pterosaur have laid out more evidence and the discussion promises to rumble on.
We have assembled a large international team who disagree with the arguments presented by GTC. As we demonstrate, the fossil fragment they describe is misidentified; it is, firstly, not from a pterosaur but is clearly a piece of the shell of the turtle Kallokibotion
