The natural world never ceases to amaze me (it is also a wonder that we ever invented boredom!), today it is the Disco Clam. This brightly coloured mollusc produces a light display that does not involve bioluminescence. Rather it has nannospheres of silica that reflect the light. What this light display is for is still a mystery. One possibility is that it is to attract a mate and the flashing lights guide male clams to females. Whatever its purpose is, I can't help but imagine that the fossil clams on my desk might have done something similar....
P.S. Watch the video!
Party people, here’s your new patronus: the disco clam. A favorite of scuba divers, Ctenoides ales is known as the disco clam for its flashing light display that looks straight out of a dubstep show.
